We first encountered the Beerita at a famous Tex-Mex place here in Houston and it was love at first sip. A Beerita takes everything you love about a great margarita and adds everything you love about a crisp Mexican lager on a hot day, and here in Houston, we get a LOT of hot days. Some Mexican breweries have started selling 6-7oz bottles specifically to make a Beerita. We made ours with our Bravado Spice Lime & Yuzu Margarita Mix, and it was so good we made another. If you've never had a Beerita or even heard of one, try it today and enjoy it on your balcony, porch, or patio!
Regarding the glass/goblet/chalice/fishbowl you use for your Beerita: you're going to want something relatively large (12oz+) with a wide mouth to accommodate the upside-down beer bottle. You don't have to salt the rim of your glass, but if you do, be sure to use coarse kosher or sea salt. Regular iodized table salt or Himalayan sea salt are going to be far too salty.
This recipe is entirely scalable and endlessly tweakable. We found that about 4 oz of Bravado Spice Lime & Yuzu Margarita Mix plus about a lime's worth of fresh juice was a good ratio for the tequila and beer in the final product. If it's a bit too tart for you, you can substitute lemons or Meyer lemons instead of the limes.
There's not much to this recipe, but the only tricky part is adding the beer. You want to put your thumb over the open top of the beer and then, gently turning it upside down, submerge the opening by about half an inch or so before you remove your thumb. The real magic of the Beerita is that it starts off all margarita, but as you drink it, you can lift the beer a bit so more glugs into the cocktail so by the end the drink is entirely beer. If all you can find is a 12 oz bottle of beer, we'd recommend doubling the rest of the recipe to compensate, and getting fishbowl glass large enough.
The Beerita has quickly become a cocktail favorite, and we're sure you'll love it too!
3-4 oz - Bravado Spice Lime & Yuzu Margaria Mix
1 3/4 oz - Silver Tequila
1 1/2 oz - Fresh lime juice (about 1 lime's worth)
7 oz - Bottle of Mexican lager
- Lime wheel for garnish (optional)
- Coarse kosher or sea salt
Moisten and then salt the rim of the glass (ideally 12oz+)
Add the ice to the glass/chalice/goblet/fishbowl and then add the tequila, Bravado Spice Lime & Yuzu Margarita Mix, and lime juice.
Open the 6-7oz bottle of Mexican Lager (both Corona and Dos Equis make 7 oz bottles of beer for exactly this purpose) and place your thumb over the opening, then lower the bottle upside down so that the opening is below the surface, then remove your thumb. Lift the beer just a little out the margarita so that a little of the beer come out. You can do this again and again as you drink more of the margarita.
